A Pilot Survey of the Disabled in a Rural Area of Korea



Abstract
The purpose of this survey was to find the statistical and technical information regarding the disable
in one rural area of Korea and to provide necessary information for planning and developing a mod -1
community-based rehabilitation program for the rural area in Korea.
The survey population was located in Do-chuck Myon, Kwang-ju Gun, Kyunggi Province in Kore .
The subjects for survey were 3,830 family members of 880 house holds in the selected area.
Data was collected by trained interviewers with a structured questionnaire under continuous supe -
vision of a field supervisor.
The results were as follows:
(1) The prevalence rate for the disabled was 43.86 per 1,000 persons.
(2) The most common type of disability was impairment of the trunk and extremities which constituted
60.7% of the total. The second type with 17.3% was mental retardation. (3) The prevalence increased in direct proportion to age.
(4) Most of the impairments of trunk and extremity had developed in the adult period. The most common, cause of disability was trauma such as traffic or other accidents.
(5) Most of the disabled were in the poor socioeconomic class and only 34.1% were working for their living.
